Most reading platforms are built for readers who already have reliable broadband, international payment cards, and a catalog stocked by publishers who’ve never set foot on the continent. Bookpheral started from the opposite direction: we asked what an educator in Lagos, Abuja, or Accra actually needs to get a book from their desk into a student’s hands — and built backward from there.

Educators first, not an afterthought

Every major decision in Bookpheral traces back to one group: the educators writing, curating, and assigning the books. That’s why revenue share isn’t a flat, take-it-or-leave-it number — it scales up for early adopters through our Founding Educators Circle, and up again for institutional and departmental content. It’s why payouts are designed around how Nigerian educators actually get paid, not how a Silicon Valley payments team assumes everyone gets paid.

We didn’t want to build another storefront with books bolted on. We wanted to build the thing an educator opens first thing in the morning.

What’s live today

The core loop works end to end: an educator uploads a book, it goes through review, it lists in the store, a student buys it with Paystack, and they read it — on web today, with the mobile app close behind. Underneath that simple sentence is a lot of unglamorous infrastructure: payment reconciliation that doesn’t leave buyers stranded when a webhook drops, a moderation workflow that keeps the catalog trustworthy without burying a submission in review-limbo, and a reader built to work well on the kind of connection most of our users actually have.

What’s next

We’re opening Bookpheral to independent authors, not just institution-affiliated educators, and refining the details — role terminology, device limits, offline reading — based on what our pilot institution tells us once real students are using it daily. This blog is where we’ll document that, honestly: what worked, what we got wrong, and what we’re building next.
